After a gruesome 1-3-1 road trip, the Red Wings returned home to Little Caesars Arena in winning fashion by beating the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 off goals from Jonatan Berggren, Alex DeBrincat, Andrew Copp, and Dylan Larkin.
Unlike most of the road trip, the Wings got offense from all three situational units through two even-strength goals (Bergrenn and DeBrincat), one shorthanded goal by Copp, and a power-play tallie courtesy of Larkin.
The Wing’s penalty kill was also unblemished on the night by killing all three Montreal powerplays, including one late in the third period following an unsuccessful goaltender interference challenge by Todd McLellan.
As for Detroit’s power play, they only converted once on four tries (their fourth was abbreviated as Juraj Slafkovsky took a high-sticking infraction with just 1:04 remaining in the 3rd period). After tonight, Detroit still holds the league’s No. 3 best powerplay unit and the No. 2 best in the Eastern Conference at a 28.3% clip.
The Wings also reached a milestone on the season tonight as they recorded a season-high 45 shots on Sam Montembeault’s net. The high volume of shots is, of course, a trend that Wings fans and coaches alike hope continues moving forward.
The Wings will remain home for their next game as the Tampa Bay Lightning visit LCA on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
