The Detroit Red Wings opened day two of the 2024 NHL Draft by selecting LW Max Plante with the 47th pick. A tenacious playmaker out of Hermantown, Minnesota who is committed to play with Minnesota-Duluth in the NCAA next season.

Quick Facts

  • Same agency as Justin Holl
  • His father is Derek Plante, a former NHLer and associate coach with the Chicago Blackhawks
  • Plante has said that he tries to model his game after Brad Marchand

Here’s a snippet from EliteProspect’s 2024 NHL Draft Guide:

“Plante is one of the most skilled passers in the draft especially off
the backhand. He feathers pucks through the tiniest of openings.
Defensive pressure only empowers him. He takes advantage of
assertive defending by ripping a pass right through it. He deceives
enough to open lanesן but also knows when to make the quick pass
for the counterattack. More than just a playmaking specialist, Plante brings defensive
value, too. He supports down low, closes out high with speed, forces
turnovers, and rips pucks off sticks on the forecheck.”

Not a big guy, 5’11” 176 lbs, but the production numbers do the talking. Plante scored 90 pts (21-69–90) in 75 games with the US Development Program. The EliteProspects Consolidated Ranking had Max Plante at no. 72. Just looking at the numbers and the tape that I have seen, Plante is a high-ceiling prospect that has spent time with some of the best hockey minds in the world. It’s also encouraging that Plante will be playing for Scott Sandelin at the University of Minnesota-Duluth next season — an underrated program.
