Red Wings Select Joren Van Pottelberghe at 110th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft
SUNRISE, FLA -- The Red Wings have selected goaltender Joren Van Pottelberghe at 110th overall
From Future Considerations:
Van Pottelberghe is a big and calm goalie who uses his size and smarts well. He fills the net well with his size and keeps his stance tight. He can make some very impressive point blank saves and keeps his composure even when he sees loads of rubber. He skates well with a quick feet, but needs to build on skating strength and push power as he can look a little slower in reacting to getting across crease. He reads the play very well and anticipates well. Very athletic when he needs to scramble, but even when he is making desperation attempts, he maintains some sense of position, lending to his calm nature. Has the mental toughness to forget about his blunders, but also learn from them. Rarely will you see him make the same mistake twice in a game. We really like his confidence in between the pipes as he comes out to challenge shoot- ers and plays outside of the blue paint for the majority of the shots he faces. Like many young stoppers nowadays, he drops down very quickly when the play is in tight and seals off the lower portion of net very well, but on the same token, he can leave a lot of net up high to shoot at, even with his size advantage. Has very impressive rebound control and can deaden the puck with his chest and arms. Has some issue with his glove hand as it has been very effective at times and then slow other times we watched him this season. His play with the puck is also something that leaves area for some improvement.
