Defenseman Erik Gustafsson’s time with the Rangers is up — now the 32-year-old Swede is signing a two-year contract with Detroit:
Gustafsson is coming off back-to-back 30-point seasons between the Rangers, Maple Leafs, and Capitals. At six-foot, 196 lbs., Gustafsson isn’t the biggest defenseman but has shown he has the ability to get involved on offense. This is likely the replacement for Shayne Gostisbehere, who is reportedly testing the open market. I suppose this could also be the replacement for Jake Walman, who was traded to San Jose. Either way you look at it — Gustafsson has seen his share of time on the power play, so expect that he will slide into that role with Detroit as well.
The term, much like Cam Talbot’s deal, is easily digestible from a fan perspective. Two years worth a total of $4 million is a bargain bin find when you consider some of the contracts being signed today.
