Red Wings Sign Defenseman Jon Merrill: 1 Year, $925,000

Detroit continues signing players to short term contracts as they close a deal with defenseman Jon Merrill, formerly of the Vegas Golden Knights. The deal is 1 year at a $925k cap hit.

Merrill played 49 games for Vegas last season scoring 7 points (2 goals, 5 assists). He provided 1.3 Standing Points Above Replacement. Detroit’s highest SPAR was Patrik Nemeth with +0.4.

He shoots left, and at 6’3”, 195 lbs adds some size to Detroit’s blueline.

Merrill has ties to Detroit, playing for the Little Caesars program, the USDP, and the University of Michigan.

With this deal, Yzerman continues to add players to Detroit’s roster who will likely provide an improvement on the ice with very little risk, due to their short term contracts.
