Red Wings sign defenseman Troy Stecher to two-year deal

The Red Wings have signed defenseman Troy Stecher to a two-year contract, the team announced early Saturday afternoon:

Elliotte Friedman reports that the contract will be $1.7 million AAV.

The 26-year-old rearguard went to the open market after his former team, the Vancouver Canucks, did not qualify him earlier in the week. It’s another smart, and safe signing from Steve Yzerman, who has shied away from handing out big contracts so far in free agency.

Stecher, a right-hand shot, will add great value to the Red Wings rebuilding blue line. He’s put up 75 points in 286 NHL games. The signing comes after Detroit missed out on signing highly-coveted defenseman Torey Krug — who signed a massive seven-year deal with the St. Louis Blues Friday night. Stecher will presumably step into a big role in the Motor City, it’s likely he will slate into the top-four and play a significant role on special teams.
