Red Wings sign Evgeny Svechnikov to one-year contract extension

Red Wings fans can look forward to at least one more year of Evgeny Svechnikov — the team announced Sunday afternoon that it signed the Russian forward and former first-round pick to a one-year contract extension.

This is a significant update, as there were previously some rumors that indicated Svechnikov would return to Russia and play in the KHL.

Svechnikov has grappled with injury recently, which has hindered his development. This one-year contract is big for his future with the Red Wings — he’ll have a chance now to show he belongs with the big club.

The Red Wings drafted Evgeny Svechnikov at 19th overall in 2015. He had a breakout season as a rookie in 2017-2018 with the Grand Rapids Griffins, scoring 51 points (20-31—51) in 74 games.
