It’s the contract announcement everyone has been waiting for! The Red Wings announced Monday that they have re-signed RFA forward Jonatan Berggren to a one-year deal with an AAV of $825k.
This was one of three contracts that Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman had to get sorted out before training camp gets underway this Thursday. Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond are both seeking long-term deals in Detroit, but the negotiations are still ongoing. With Berggren’s contract out of the way now, the team has around $16.8 million to get both Seider and Raymond signed.
Back to Berggren — he’s shown that he can provide offense at the NHL level, but has struggled to find a full-time roster spot. The Wings won’t have the luxury of waiver exemption with the 24-year-old winger going forward, so if the team were to decide he should go to Grand Rapids, he would go through the waiver process and likely picked up by another team. This is going to be a huge “show me” deal for Jonatan if he wants to stay in Detroit for the long haul.
