The Red Wings have officially been bitten by the injury bug — and in one of their most vulnerable spots, if you can believe it… Since they have so many of them between Detroit and Grand Rapids. With Cam Talbot exiting Sunday’s game with a lower-body injury and Alex Lyon still nursing an injury himself, the Red Wings announced that Sebastian Cossa has been summoned from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
In another announcement, Detroit said that Alex Lyon has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to Nov. 27. That puts Lyon in line to return some time midweek if he’s healthy.
Cossa, the 15th pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, has been brilliant for the Griffins in 14 starts — with a .925 SV% and a 2.21 GAA and a record of 9-4-1. Last season, Cossa made 40 starts for GR with a record of 22-9-9. Alongside MSU’s Trey Augustine, Sebastian Cossa is one of Detroit’s best goalie prospects in years.
Before the call-up, Detroit’s only healthy goaltender was Ville Husso, who did not look great in relief for Talbot on Sunday. The Wings play in Boston on Tuesday — I would expect Husso gets the start. We’ll see how long Talbot and Lyon will be out… There is a chance that Cossa doesn’t even get a start, but we’ll see. Just depends on everyone else’s availability.
