There’s no doubt that Detroit and Sweden have a rich hockey history together. The Red Wings have looked to the Scandinavian nation for its roster foundation for decades. The Wings will get a chance to build on that relationship this summer. The NHL and NHLPA announced today that the Red Wings will join the Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs for four regular season games at Avicii Arena in Stockholm as part of its Global Series.
According to the NHL, the 2023 NHL Global Series will mark the second time the Red Wings have played regular-season games in Europe. Detroit also opened its 2009-10 regular season in Stockholm with two games against the St. Louis Blues.
Currently the Red Wings have six Swedish players on its roster: Lucas Raymond, Jonatan Berggren, Simon Edvinsson, Robert Hagg, Magnus Hellberg and Gustav Lindstrom. Past Swedish Wings include Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall, Nick Lidstrom, Tomas Holmstrom – the list goes on.
Tickets will go on sale to the public Wednesday, May 2nd. If you’re a Wings fan and you’d like to make the trip, you can inquire here.
Detroit, Minnesota, Ottawa and Toronto will be in Stockholm from November 16-19. According to the NHL, the Wings will play Ottawa on November 16th and Toronto on November 17th.
