Red Wings trade defenseman Patrik Nemeth to Avalanche in exchange for a 2022 draft pick

Steve Yzerman is off an running ahead of the NHL’s trade deadline on Monday — the Red Wings are sending veteran defenseman Patrik Nemeth to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a 4th round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft:

The 29-year-old Swede has spent almost two season with the Red Wings, and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Nemeth, as most of us know, isn’t exactly the type of player who shows up on the scoresheet, but has always been thought of as a strong two-way defender who can chip in offensively from time-to-time. Nemeth played 103 games with the Red Wings in which he registered 17 points. For Colorado, this gives them a strong depth defenseman who can step in at any time during their run to a potential Stanley Cup title.

According to The Athletic’s Avalanche writer Peter Baugh, Detroit will retain 50% of Nemeth’s $3 million cap hit.

This adds another pick to Steve Yzerman’s glut of draft stock. The Red Wings now have three 4th-round picks in the 2022 NHL Draft. There are more moves expected from Detroit as we approach Monday’s 3pm deadline. Plenty of names on Detroit’s roster have come up as potential targets for teams looking to make a run in the playoffs; some of those names include goaltender Jonathan Bernier, forward Luke Glendening, among others.
