Red Wings trade Pavel Datsyuk and 16th overall pick to Arizona Coyotes for 20th overall, 53rd overall, and Joe Vitale

BUFFALO, NY — The Red Wings have traded Pavel Datsyuk and 16th overall to the Arizona Coyotes for 20th overall, 53rd overall and Joe Vitale.

Real interesting move here, as they could have had Jakob Chychrun, who is considered to be one of the Draft’s best defensemen. At first it was a head-scratcher, but now is seeming to be like a real favorable move for the Red Wings.

There was a lot of question as to what Ken Holland would have to give up to move Datsyuk’s $7.5 million cap hit, and a lot of the names hovering around speculation were that of Tomas Jurco, Teemu Pulkkinen, and even Andreas Athanasiou. Ken Holland really pulled a rabbit out of his hat with this one, as he moves back four picks, and gains a second-round pick.

With that, now the Red Wings have a sizable amount of flexibility to go out and sign a big-name free agent. The Red Wings will now pick at 20th overall. Keep an eye out for them taking a player like German Rubtsov, Samuel Girard, or Alex Debrincat. Stay tuned.
