The odd man out is, well, on his way out.
The Red Wings announced Monday night that goaltender Ville Husso is being traded to Anaheim in exchange for future considerations. Husso, 30 years old, is on the final year of his contract with an AAV of $4.75 million.
I expected this move to happen a lot sooner, honestly. The cold-hard fact is that Husso has been pretty inconsistent and downright underwhelming between the AHL and NHL. Throw in his history with injuries and, well, it was fun while it lasted. We’ll just say that.
I like the move for Detroit — you clear some cap (around $3.6 million), and it cost virtually nothing. Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot have solidified the rotation in the NHL, so a fresh start is probably for the best in Ville Husso’s case. The NHL trade deadline is just around the corner, now Steve Yzerman has a little more space to play around with. Is this trade a precursor or simply a coincidence?
