Veleno suspended by IIHF

Red Wings forward Joe Veleno won’t be able to suit up for Team Canada for a handful of games following a decision from the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Disciplinary Panel.

Here’s the play that earned Veleno a suspension:

The disciplinary action was expected – but highly debated on social media from what I could see. I don’t understand why – this was a dangerous stunt Veleno pulled. He ended up with a five-game suspension, to which JV90 accepted according to a statement released from Team Canada GM Doug Armstrong.

Joe Veleno had been playing really well for Team Canada to start the 2023 World Championship. It’s unfortunate that he made a bozo move to get himself benched by tournament authorities. You also worry that he doesn’t pull something like this again. That kind of behavior won’t be acceptable in the NHL. Given Veleno’s statement, I want to believe that he knows it was a stupid thing to do.
