Red Wings waive Justin Holl

Holl-long, goodbye.

The Red Wings are waiving defenseman Justin Holl in year two of his three-year contract at $3.4 million AAV.

The Wings aren’t going to get a full $3.4 million’s worth of cap relief with this move. They’ll get a cap savings of just north of a million dollars — that’s enough to fit in another player. Expect that Austin Watson will be the addition here, but we’ll see… Marco Kasper played really well in preseason and should be in the conversation.

UPDATE 10/6/24 3:30 PM ET: Marco Kasper is being sent to Grand Rapids, along with a number of other players.

The Red Wings open the regular season at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday. They’re hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins, who gave them fits in the preseason. The Grand Rapids Griffins will open the AHL regular season against the Milwaukee Admirals Friday, October 11 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.
