Red Wings Week Ahead: October 18

Sunday – Sleepy Atlantic

Not a single team in the Wings’ division is playing Sunday. There is plenty of other hockey to be watched, however, and the NHL decided to spread it out nicely throughout the day. New Jersey heads to New York to face the Rangers for a 1:00pm matinee, St. Louis heads to WInnipeg for a 3:00pm matchup, and a bunch of other Western Conference teams round out the schedule late into the night.

Monday – WIIM Radio!

Only one game on the NHL schedule tonight – Sharks at Rangers. San Jose was undefeated until they lost to the Islanders on Saturday, so this isn’t even an interesting game from that standpoint.

But hey, WIIM Radio is back for its next weekly installment! Make sure you ask a bunch of good questions for your beloved broadcasters while they try to figure out the difference between the 3-0-0 team we saw through Tuesday and the team we saw this past weekend.

Tuesday – Interconference Games Aplenty

The Wings aren’t playing still but there are five games featuring a team from the Western and Eastern Conferences. Tampa Bay-Nashville might be fun to watch as they’re both looking to be good teams again this year, but tonight also could feature some real snoozers, like Arizona-New Jersey.

Wednesday – Red Wings at Oilers (9:30pm on SN1 and FS-D)

The Wings kick off their only trip to Western Canada this year with a game against the hapless Edmonton Oilers and their newest noted goon, Connor McDavid. Detroit will be looking to snap their two-game losing streak and Edmonton seems like the perfect team to do that. It’s a late game tonight, folks, so we hope you’re all awake enough to watch this one.

Thursday – Eight Games, No Octopi

Half the league is playing tonight but none of them wear the Winged Wheel. The late-night tilt of Los Angeles-San Jose might be a battle of surprising teams in the Pacific, with the Kings looking toothless and the Sharks predatory (insert Raffi Torres headhunting joke here).

Friday – Red Wings at Flames (9:00pm on SN1 and FS-D)

Detroit takes on the darlings of last year’s playoffs at the Saddledome. The Flames defied what the fancy stats were telling them for unpredictable success but this season looks like a bit of a different story so far. Interestingly enough, the Wings are trending the same way, with a winning record while being badly outshot in three of their first five games. We’ll see if Detroit can turn it around and prevent themselves from becoming the 2015 Calgary Flames, who were already the 2014 Colorado Avalanche, because no one wants to be Colorado.

Saturday – Red Wings at Canucks (10:00pm on CBC and FS-D)

The Wings finish up their Western Canada swing with a gander on into British Columbia to take on the habitual goalie-trading Canucks. Hopefully by this point we’re talking about the icing on top of an already-successful road trip. After this it’s another two-day break before the boys return to the Joe and we’d all really like to have fun things to talk about until then. Prepare your caffeinated beverage of choice, because it’ll be well into Sunday before this one’s over.

Tonight also features a rematch of the 2015 Final as the Lightning face off against the Blackhawks in the building they lost the Cup in. I’m sure that won’t be made into a big deal or anything.
