Update 7/9/2026: After HSJ’s report, MLive’s Ansar Khan reports that Larkin has expanded his list to include Dallas. HSJ published another report shortly after that conflicts with Khan’s reporting, saying the list is still at three teams.
There’s a new twist in the standoff between Dylan Larkin and Steve Yzerman.
According to Helene St. James, Larkin’s camp has not expanded his paltry list of teams he wants to be traded to. The list remains three teams – Florida, Las Vegas, and Minnesota. This contradicts previous reporting that Larkin had expanded his list to Dallas. Yzerman has taken a hardline approach with Larkin’s trade request.
“My job as the manager of the Detroit Red Wings is always to do what is in the best interest of the Detroit Red Wings, and I will act accordingly to that, I cannot make any guarantees, or did not make any guarantees, that that request could or would be met,” Yzerman told the media. The problem is, the three teams on Larkin’s list don’t have enough to satisfy Yzerman’s price tag, and if they do, those teams certainly aren’t parting with any key pieces. Larkin has five years left on his current deal, which carries an AAV south of $9 million. You don’t get NHL players like Dylan Larkin on those terms anymore.
Whatever you think of the situation, it must be stated that this is not Steve Yzerman’s first rodeo. He practically wrote the playbook on how to deal with these type of disputes during his time in Tampa. History tells us that it may drag into training camp and possibly into the regular season.
At this point, we all get to live in uncertainty together. I just can’t help but to think what this will look like when players start reporting.
