REPORT: Evgeny Svechnikov to return to Russia, play in KHL next season

Reports from “allhockey” indicate that Red Wings forward Evgeny Svechnikov will return to Russia next season and play with AK Bars.

Here’s a rough translation of the aritcle:

Detroit striker Evgeni Svechnikov will return to Ak Bars next season. In 2015, the Russian was selected by Detroit in the draft of the newcomers of the National Hockey League in the first round under the common 19th number. For the past four years, the 23-year-old striker has played in the AHL for Grand Rapids and spent only 20 matches for the Red Wings. Svechnikov completely missed the 2018/19 season due to an injury to the cruciate ligaments of his right leg. In the 2013/14 season, Svechnikov spent three matches in the Continental Hockey League for Kazan “Ak Bars”.In the current regular season of the AHL, Svechnikov spent 45 matches in which he scored 23 (11 + 12) points with a “-10” utility indicator.

It’s hard to say that this is a surprising development, if true — Svechnikov has been plagued by injuries, which has hampered his development. This, of course, following a breakout rookie season with the Griffins in the 2016-2017 campaign. Since then, Svechnikov has struggled to find an every day spot on the NHL club.

If you ask me, Svechnikov has rebounded well this season in Grand Rapids, but the 23-year-old winger is likely vying for a bigger role with a bigger club.

We have not received any confirmation from the Red Wings, or Griffins. We’ll be working to get verification. Stay Tuned.
