On day two of the 2024 NHL Draft, we’re seeing reports that the Red Wings and Rangers may be working on a trade that would bring Michigan native Jacob Trouba to Detroit.
According to Lary Brooks at the New York Post, both teams are working on a deal, but it’s not clear what would be going to New York in return for the former Michigan Wolverine. The report states that the Rangers would likely be retaining some cap for the final years of Trouba’s deal:
“We [New York Post] are told the Rangers may retain $2.5 million per year on the two remaining seasons of Trouba’s $8M annual cap charge. That represents 31.25 percent retention that would also be applied to the $12M in salary Trouba has coming over the next two seasons.”
Trouba, who turns 31 in February, is a right-shot defenseman that plays the game like a hammer, perhaps a little too much at times. He’s shown offensive ability, but what stands out to most fans is his tendency to lay big hits, sometimes not in the cleanest of fashions. If the deal does come to fruition, I like the idea of NYR retaining money for the rest of his current contract, but I really want to see what the Wings will be paying to bring him back to his home state. Trouba posted 22 points (3-19–22) in 69 games last season.
