Thursday Open Thread: Women’s SUI/SWE Bronze Medal Game and Women’s USA/CAN Gold Medal Game

Bronze Medal Game

The Sweden and the Swiss are battling for which cross is better, Nordic or Suisse, while they battle out for the less shiny medal starting at 7AM.

The Swedes were on the wrong side of a 6-1 blasting by the Americans, while the Canadians beat the Swiss behind Natalie Spooner’s two goals back on Monday.

Is this game the battle of the losers? Well, maybe. I prefer to look at it as the battle of meatballs and chocolate or DINNER vs. dessert.

Gold Medal Game

The United States and Canada will meet in the women’s hockey gold medal game today for the fourth time in five Olympics.

Yes, you read that correctly.

The Canadians narrowly defeated the Americans by a score of 3-2 in a thriller during the preliminary rounds, but these two teams will get to battle it out yet again.

The imbalance of talent in the women’s hockey world has led to the North Americans holding dominance in the sport for quite some time now, with the Canadians having a silver from Nagano (1998) and three consecutive gold medals since the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.

By comparison, their American counterparts have one gold (1998), two silvers (2002, 2010), and one bronze (2006) since the sport’s Olympic inception in 1998.

May the maple syrup and barbecue put up a good battle.

Keep it clean and have fun everybody!
