Wings lose to Preds 3-2 after first shootout of the season

Red Wings wearing their road whites at home so the Preds can wear their gray socks.

First Period

First minute and it’s all Red Wings with Svechnikov setting Larkin up but Larkin kind of jams himself up on the corner of the net and can’t get much of a shot.

2:30 in and Josi to the Bad Boy Box for tripping Vladdy. Time for a Rrrrred Wings powerplay! Larkin out with Ras and Zadina and Zadina whiffs on a nice pass from Ras. Good puck movement though, which we love to see. Penalty is killed by the worst penalty kill in the League. No, that’s not a Red Wings joke about killing our own penalty it really is Nashville who is the worst on paper.

Halfway and the pace has evened out a big, not many shots for either side but we only care about “compete-level”. Preds’ Harper is seen limping off the ice after being checked and bouncing off the glass (not a dramatic or questionable hit by any means).

5 minutes left and we are not down by 4 goals. Or any amount of goals. That’s a moral victory. Greiss does almost made an uh-oh behind the net with a bounce to our old friend Jarnkrok but he recovers to make the save.

2:30 left and we have a little bit of clownshoes around our own net but Givani Smith helps out Greiss to keep the score 0-0.

DARREN HELM BREAKAWAY…lol jk he lost the puck and didn’t even get a shot.

But you know who did get a shot? DANNY DEKEYSER. 1-0 Red Wings and that’ll do it. Erne is of course in the mix screening the goalie, our expert goal scoring dynamo.

Pretty good period for the Wings overall. A few uh-ohs but nothing catastrophic and no breakdowns.

Second Period

Not such a great start to this period. But 5 minutes in and there is #11 on #11 violence and we’re on the powerplay again! Kunin goes to the Crimes Cabana. Red Wings kill the Red Wings powerplay with a Too Much Man penalty. Givani Smith serves the bench minor in the Scapegoat Stall and we have 4 on 4 hockey. Preds have their powerplay for a minute and hit the goalpost right away. But no harm done and even strength again.

Past the halfway mark and everyone is still just kind of bumbling around not able to get anything together. LGD to the Evildoer Enclosure for interference. Penalty kill time and it worked!

5 minutes left and Mantha is putting in work skating through some Preds to the net but, as is our theme tonight, he isn’t able to get much of a shot.

Another goalpost for Josi that looked like it was in but Greiss got enough of a piece that it deflected to the post. Filppula gets crunched by a very late hit he didn’t see coming. Catches his back on the Red Wings bench boards and heads off ice and down the tunnel. LGD goes after Davies in revenge and gets a double minor. LGD may be extra salty because he is not winning faceoffs.

Penalty kill goes to work and gets it done. On to the third still up 1-0.

Third Period

HERE WE GO, ALL PART OF THE PLAN! Preds score a few minutes in during a line change. Kunin had all the time and space in the world and Greiss couldn’t do much about it. Tie game 1-1.

Filppula seems no worse for wear after the earlier hit and even shot the puck when Mantha made a great play and sent it over to him. Blocked, but he was definitely shooting it!

Not much to report otherwise in the first half, a lot of pushing and shoving. Mickey Redmond is so proud of “little Zadina” for laying down the reverse hit.

8 minutes left and stop me if you’ve heard this before but ELITE GOAL SCORING DYNAMO ADAM ERNE SCORES! 2-1 RED WINGS! That is his 9th goal of the season.

Rasmussen, who took a hit earlier, took a real bad one but is arguing to stay on the bench. His head got sent into the (curved) edge of the glass by the bench at full speed. Even Mick is saying they should send him to concussion protocol but he’s staying in the game.

4 minutes to go Staal took his turn in the Den for Doers of Dastardly Deeds. Granlund finds himself wide open to snipe home a rebound into an open net. Tie game 2-2.

One minute to go and still tied.

We’re going to extra innings.

OVERTIME

Larkin out with Hronek and Erne shouldn’t make me laugh but it does. Save us Erne. Larkin and Hronek head off and Erne makes a nice spin move and is in with DK but nope. Some good chances for both sides but Wings were kind of poopy.

SKILLS COMPETITION

First shootout of the season for the Wings!

Larkin WHAT THE HECK…I don’t know what happened but he gets the puck in his own feet and yeah it’s a no.

Johansen SCORES. moves in at a crawl and gets pretty much to the goal line before chipping it over Greiss who went down.

Zadina NOPE.

Josi SCORES.

Nashville wins in the shootout. We grab the Loser Point!
