Fer Sure Mailbag: The Rochester Conference Edition

We are getting ready to record Episode 29 of our NHL podcast “Fer Sure: A 200 Foot Podcast.” If you missed the last episode, you can catch up here.

This weekend, I will be in Rochester for the RIT Sports Analytics Conference. I will be taking advantage of the chance to be around top people in the field by recording a couple interviews with people who will be presenting.

I’m not sure how long the interviews will be, so we will either combine them both into a special RITSAC episode or we might use them in future episodes. But, that’s more of an “us” problem, and not a “you” problem.

For one of the interviews, I will be talking to Matt Cane . Matt is very well-respected figure in the sports analytics community, and as I learned last year at the conference, a very fun person to talk to. He’s probably best known for his free agent salary prediction model, which attempts to predict the most likely deals free agents will be signed to by an NHL GM (not necessarily what they SHOULD be signed to.)

For the other interview, I will be talking to Matt Barlowe and CJ Turtoro. They will be running a Tableau workshop the first night of the conference, and they know a lot about data visualization, among other things. CJ is a Devils fan, and Matt is a Carolina fan, so feel free to ask questions about those teams as well.

Please remember that Fer Sure is dedicated to the entire NHL (and more) and that we may not get to all (or any) of the questions. We try to get to at least some of the questions every episode, but we can’t always do it. Our other podcast on the network, WIIM Radio, is dedicated to the Red Wings.

Please send in questions in the comments, or you can also tweet questions to us here.

As a reminder, this isn’t really a discussion post, and if people start answering the questions that other people ask, it can be difficult to fish through them when we’re recording. Basically, if it doesn’t end in a question mark, please don’t put it here.

If it makes sense to release these interviews together as part of a special RITSAC episode, that would likely come out early next week. We’ve had confirmations for future shows from two guests I’ve been trying to get for a year, so you can imagine they will be big names. Once I have firm confirmation, we’ll let you know.

If you are using a podcast app, you can find both this podcast and WIIM Radio (our podcast devoted to the Red Wings) in the same channel – Winging it in Motown. Also, we’ve been asked about the feed not showing up in Google Play/Podcasts. It does not appear to be available there, although we are waiting to hear back. You can find us on Stitcher, which appears to be available for Android devices.
