It was a regulation loss and an overtime loss for Paterson last week, but I felt better about his play after watching how poorly his team played in front of him.

Watch the 3rd Windsor goal and point and laugh at the Saginaw defense. This was a rough game by Paterson’s standards, but he also didn’t get a lot of support from his defense. He allowed 4 goals on 15 shots, and was pulled 5 minutes into the 2nd period. Box Score
12.7.13 Sagniaw Spirit vs Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds
This was a 5-4 OT loss for Paterson and the Spirit. Paterson stopped 38 of 43 shots and from the recaps I read, it sounds like Paterson was tested a lot in this game and played very well. Box Score

Athanasiou missed a game on December 6th due to an upper body injury, but made up for lost time in the 2 games he did play last week. In those 2 games he had 2 goals, 5 assists, was the 1st star of the game in both of them and didn’t take any penalties. Not a bad week at all.

Athanasiou had 7 points (2 goals, 5 assists), was a +4, and a was the 1st star of the game in only 2 games played in the first week in December.

Athanasiou had 1 shorthanded goal, 2 assists( ES and PP), was a +1, and named 1st star of the game. Andreas has impressive speed and he used it to get his 2nd shorthanded goal of the season. Box Score

I mentioned before that I was keeping an eye on his penalties because they were standing out to me as not only high for him, but the types of penalties he was taking were possibly concerning. He’s now gone his last 7 games without a penalty, so I see that as a good sign. He’s been increasing his already good points production and has 15 points (6G 9A) in his last 7 games and is 21st in in total points in the OHL.

I’m not 100% sure yet, but it looks like Bertuzzi may have been moved up to the 2nd line from the 3rd. Looking at his linemates when goals have been scored on the most recent box scores indicate that’s the case, but I’ll keep watching to see if it was temporary, or a permanent promotion. If he has been moved up to the 2nd line, he would presumably get more ice time and possibly increase his already career high points; he’s also now only 3 goals away from his career high, and in 14 fewer games.

Since we last met, Janmark played 4 games and only had 1 goal, 7 SOG, 1 hit, and 10 PIM for “abuse of officials”. Prior to his knee injury in the Karjala Tournament, Janmark was just above a point per game pace, but since returning he only has 3 points (2G 1A) in 9 games. Despite his recent lack of production, he still leads his team in goals by 6 and points by 4. Hopefully he can fully recover soon.

Tre Kronor to Channel One Cup in Sochi – Swedish Ice Hockey Association
Mattias Janmark will play for Tre Kronor in the upcoming Euro Hockey Tournament in Sochi Dec 19-22. Niklas Kronwall’s brother Staffan(D), and Jonathan Ericsson’s brother Jimmie (F) will also play in the tournament.

Bäckman is on a point streak. He has 4 points in his last 4 games, and considering he only had 7 points in his first 27 games, that’s impressive. It also appears, based on his ice time, that he may have either moved up to the 1st defensive pairing, or is simply getting a little more ice time per game.
Bäckman leads his team in blocked shots and not only leads his team in +/- (by almost double), but leads the entire SHL with his +17. His 8 PIM in 31 games is pretty impressive as well and indicates he plays a smart, disciplined game.
