Quick Hits: It’s Monday and There is No Hockey Until Thursday

  • Saturday night was not without its negatives for Ty Conklin, who was hit in the eye with a stick and suffered a bruise. Sounds like he should be fine for next game, though. [Detroit Free Press]
  • Oh look, another writer doubting the Wings. [Copper and Blue]
  • What does Jimmy Howard have in common with Steve Mason and Brian Elliott? They are all among five goalies who had below average save percentages last year and faced more than 1500 shots. Thankfully, this article is about how bad of a goalie Steve Mason is. Unthankfully, I have Mr. Mason on Shady Weber and I fear I will suffer greatly for it until I can find a replacement. [Hockey Prospectus]
  • Glen Sather, Rangers GM and generally one of the old school guys, is actually in favor of changing the icing rule to a safer variant. Next thing you know, he’ll be telling us that Wade Redden was a bad signing. [New York Post]
  • The declining benefits of starting the season in Europe is one of the reasons the Calgary Flames turned down an offer to open their season there. I wasn’t aware teams were given a choice in the matter, honestly, nor was I aware that the Flames would be a team who the NHL would want to send overseas to show off. [Calgary Sun]
  • One of the more surprising moments yesterday was the lack of news regarding a suspension for Cory Sarich. His hit on Matt Cooke was gruesome (view it here), and I figured Shanny would be swift in punishing Sarich to establish a clear non-bias due to Cooke’s long-standing history. [NBC Sports]
  • Hockey returned to Winnipeg yesterday, and the hockey world is still shaking off the effects of the party. The team had multiple ceremonies to usher in a new era of Jets hockey, including a heart felt ceremony honoring Rick Rypien who never played a game with the franchise, but died just weeks after signing a contract with the team. True North has class. [Puck Daddy]
  • Now Winnipeg can actually play some hockey and hopefully not go 0-82 as is being joked about by some of the bloggers. They definitely did not start off on the right foot yesterday as they lost 5-1 to the Canadiens. [Habs Eyes On The Prize]
  • Blair Betts was sent back to Philadelphia yesterday after being claimed from waivers by the Montreal Canadiens due to injury. It’ll be interesting to see if the Flyers are punished for this or not; unless I am rusty, it is against CBA rules to send a player through waivers who is injured, and he must instead be placed on IR until he has healed. [Broad Street Hockey]
  • Silver Seven have their own form of CSSI now, detailing which periods the Senators get scored on in this season. [Silver Seven]
  • Ushering back memories of Mike Modano last season, Michael Cammalleri was sliced in the leg by a skate last night and it took far too long to get the attention of the referees to get him into the locker room. [Puck Daddy]

Discussion of the Day: Kinda light on the new this morning, so let’s talk about a few months from now.  Who do you think will make the All Star teams?  We know the usual guys (Malkin, Ovechkin, Chara, Thornton, etc.) will make it, so stick to some bold predictions as well as which Wings you think will make it.
