Quick Hits: The Farewell to Sheahan Edition

In Red Wings Land

Red Wings expect Riley Sheahan to thrive with Pittsburgh Penguins | George Sipple, Detroit Free Press

The Wings have said their good-byes to Riley Sheahan and seem to think he’ll fit in well with the Penguins. Both Jeff Blashill and Henrik Zetterberg had similar takes on the situation; Sheahan’s a good hockey player but doesn’t seem to have much of a spot here in Detroit.

From the article:

“I think there’s an opportunity and sometimes that’s what players need,” Blashill said. “For us, we’ve got Zetterberg, (Dylan) Larkin and (Frans) Nielsen up the middle and he couldn’t get that same opportunity. So I wish him luck.”

“Hockey-wise, it’s probably a good thing for Shee,” Zetterberg said. “He is a good player. I think he has everything you need to become a good player in this league. He didn’t really get the opportunity here, I think. Obviously, Pittsburgh wanted him and I’m pretty sure he will have a good year there.”

Best of luck, Riley! But not too much luck. Sidney Crosby has won enough Stanley Cups. Too many if you ask me.

Around the NHL

Golden Knights defeat Blues in OT, set record | Danny Webster, NHL.com

So, the Golden Knights are off to a good start. They’ve won a few overtime games in there, but that team out in Vegas is off to a 6-1 start. I can’t imagine they’ll keep up this pace forever (a quick check on Corisca shows their 5v5 xGF% 42.14%, last in the league) but it’s a fun storyline to watch. For now, the Wings are the only team in NHL history to beat the Golden Knights.
