In Red Wings Land

Sweden, Red Wings’ Gustav Nyquist win World Championship gold | MLive

Congrats to Gustav Nyquist.

Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin helps U.S. best Canada for bronze at Worlds | Freep

Really happy to see the U.S. have some success under Jeff Blashill. It’s not gold, but it’s a nice showing from a coach who hasn’t had the greatest success in the NHL. Dylan Larkin seemed to play well in the few games I could actually watch too. It was a good weekend for the Red Wings overseas.

Vegas’ band of ‘misfits’ surge into Cup Final, extend improbable run | ESPN

The freakin’ Vegas Golden Knights are headed to the Stanley Cup Final. This is one hell of a story and easily one of the most improbable things to ever happen in all of sports. I think this playoff run and the entire season will cement the Golden Knights into the Vegas culture and create a real fan base for years to come.

Yes, I realize they haven’t suffered like some franchises, but I’m not a fan of those shitty franchises, so I don’t care. I welcome new hockey fans and if Las Vegas can become a real hockey market…. that’s sweet. I’d much rather watch a cool story like this unfold and captivate a city than watch a franchise struggle for more than a decade like we’ve seen in Arizona.

The Golden Knights had different expansion rules to make sure they weren’t as terrible as the new teams we saw in the early 2000s. Should they have been this good? Probably not, but they got lucky and hit on a few players, took advantage of some dumb general managers (*cough* Dale Tallon *cough*) and found the right coach for the job.

I’ll enjoy watching Tomas Tatar raise the Stanley Cup if Vegas wins it all and I look forward to the eventual Disney movie “The Golden Misfits.”
