Here we go again. Stop me if you’ve heard this before in the past few weeks. The Wings have suddenly strung together a few wins in a row, are playing relatively good hockey and are only just a few points out of a playoff spot.
Going into this past weekend, I hardly had any hope for this team. They were still near the bottom of the table, about to play back-to-back days against the Caps and Pens and would be without Gustav Nyquist for another 5 games due to his suspension. Then all of a sudden, a switch flipped. Petr Mrazek played out of his mind, the team skated with the Capitals and Penguins in both games and somehow the Red Wings earned all four points.
The Wings are still hanging around as they head into their bye week and the trade deadline. But first they’ll have to get through a resurgent Islanders team that’s worked its way back into the playoff conversation. After firing Jack Capuano about 1 month ago they’ve gone 10-4-2 and currently sit 1 point back of Toronto for the last Eastern Conference wildcard spot. A win tonight along with a Leafs loss would pull us within 5 points of the last spot.
Hold onto your butts over the next week folks. It’s about to get interesting.
