Kraken blog: Davy Jones’ Locker Room
We know what the Wings have been up to, being [bleep]in awesome. First in rankings and first in the hearts and minds of all the people who matter.
But, what about the Kraken? There’s a dent in the lineup with Andre Burakovsky sidelined for 6-8 weeks with an upper-body injury. For as hot as the Wings have been the Kraken have been cold. They’re 1-4-1 to start the season scoring 11 goals in 6 games. The Wings are 5-1-0 with 30 goals if anyone wasn’t already counting.
This has all the makings of a trap game. Weird start time, a struggling team looking to turn things around, the Wings laughing in the face of every expectation with their insanely good start. As impressive as the scoresheet has been for the Wings, if you’ve been watching the games you’ve seen a team that’s far from invincible and has had a few periods that took goaltending and good fortune to escape. It’ll be important to keep our hubris in check and accept that some stats will regress to the mean. Did that sound smart?
Or, feel free to panic if the Wings don’t score on a powerplay. That’s one thing the Kraken are doing well, killing penalties. They’ve given up only 1 goal in 16 penalty kills (Wings are 3 goals in 23 attempted penalty kills). However, the Kraken’s powerplay isn’t anything to write home about. Unless you write home about things that aren’t very good. Then it’s definitely something to write home about.
