Ilya Kovalchuk retires: Analyzing the fallout in both New Jersey, Russia – SBNation.com
Short-term: this sucks for the Devils. They’re not going to be that good next season. Long-term: this is actually one of the best things that could happen for them. They won’t have to deal with a much higher cap-recapture penalty than what they already have. I forget where I read it, but if Kovy retired at age 35, the Devils would receive a $3.1 million dollar cap penalty.

Jeremy Roenick blasts Ilya Kovalchuk on Twitter – SBNation.com
This was so funny yesterday. First of all, Kovalchuk has the full right if he chooses to do so to walk out on his contract. Anyone can do it but only a few people can afford to. 2nd, this was a family and culture decision. Sure, the money’s even better in Russia, but he wants to be there and be with his family. I have zero issues with him retiring from the NHL.
