Friedman: Red Wings ‘most likely’ to land Russian winger Alexander Radulov

Elliote Friedman went on Sportsnet 960 in Calgary Friday morning and weighed in on the Alexander Radulov sweepstakes, as well as the Pavel Datsyuk situation. Chris Nichols over at Todays Slapshot had the full transcription of what was said:

“Well, I think we’re all expecting it, right? That he’s going to end up in Russia. Even Ken Holland this week, I saw one of his quotes was, ‘Would I like it if he came into my office and said, I’ve changed my mind and I’m going to stay. But do I expect him to say that, no.’ And Saint Petersburg was always the team.

“I do think Detroit will try to trade the contract. I think depending on what they’re willing to do as part of that, they will be able to find a partner. But I would them to try to trade the contract.

“I also think that right now, if I had to pick where Radulov was going in the NHL, I’d say Detroit is the most likely team. I’m not saying for sure 100 percent it’s going to happen, but it sounds like that there’s an attempt being made for him to go there, and to sign him.”

While it’s just speculation, the Red Wings have very much been one of the top teams in the run for Radulov. With the possible departure of veteran superstar Pavel Datsyuk, the team will look to bolster it’s top-six with experienced forwards that can contribute on a consistent level.

We’re still waiting on Datsyuk’s decision as he is on a two-week vacation with his family in Russia, but an announcement is expected to be made shortly after. I would imagine the Red Wings have spoken to Radulov’s agent and perhaps even put a tentative offer on the table.

I think that if Radulov has cleaned up his act, and legitimately wants to be in the NHL, he can provide a real edge that the Red Wings need. He’s an in-your-face player with tons of passion and skill. During his tenure in the NHL, he had a lot of offensive potency, and has tore the KHL apart since going back to Russia. If he can readjust to the North American ice surface, Radulov could end up being a great pickup for any team.
