HONK HONK: ‘Classic Hockeytown’ goal horn installed at LCA

When Little Caesars Arena hosted its first Wings game in September of 2017, fans were quick to jump on the fact that the goal horn had changed — and not in a good way. Fast-forward to present time, we have another change.. and the crowd for the home opener Saturday night should get a chance to experience what Ilitch Companies describes as a “classic Hockeytown goal horn.”

According to an announcement from Ilitch Friday afternoon, technology and equipment were to blame for the initial goal horn. Up until this season, it was a three-blast recording of the old Joe Louis Arena horn that would ring out when the Wings would score a goal. Now in 2023, according to Ilitch Companies, a method of normal air compression has made for safer use in horns, which allowed the installation of this bad boy:

“This specific model of goal horn is a distinct part of our identity as Hockeytown, harkening back to Joe Louis Arena and paying homage to legendary performances of the past,” said Ilitch executive Ryan Gustafson in Friday’s announcement.

The Red Wings home opener is slated for Saturday, October 14 at 7:00pm. Let’s hope the team can put the new hardware to work.
