Isles blog: Lighthouse Hockey

The Wings had a 4 game point streak snapped on Thursday with a loss to the Habs. Yes, they had 3 wins and an OT loss. Yes, it was the same Red Wings.

Tonight’s game against the Islanders is not high stakes as we are both solidly bad, but it could be a critical loss for #TeamTank as we (72 pts) are in a tight race with Montreal (71 pts) and Arizona (70 pts) for position. We could potentially finish as low as 29th in the standings.

The Islanders are bringing a two-game winning streak (Flyers, Rangers) and a bit of baggage with them to Detroit. Most importantly, is this the last game for John Tavares in an Islanders uniform? He has now missed the playoffs 6 times in his 9 year career. Management obviously wants him to stay, but he could become an unrestricted free agent in July.

Michigan-native Coach Doug Weight is feeling the…weight…of the disappointing season and has said he personally needs to work harder. It’s not going to be a fun offseason for him if Tavares walks.

The Wings will be fighting hard to give the hometown fans one last hurrah and go out with a little pride. The players know the weight the logo on their chest carries, and will do their best to respect that, as there have been a number of embarrassing losses already this season.

No games are truly meaningless, so one last time…LET’S GO RED WINGS!

Somebody throw an octopus.
