U Mad? Ducks 5 – Red Wings 2

I mean, really, how can you even be mad?

As I sit here writing the intro for another home game on another weekday that’s going to turn into another loss against a good team, I don’t even feel any angry emotions. I’m not one to use injuries as an excuse, but when you’re missing 8 regulars out of a team of 18 skaters, expectations tend to be lowered to match the roster that is being put out on the ice.

That’s why tonight’s game is actually pretty comical and doesn’t mean anything. Yes, we all hate the Ducks because they’re a bunch of assholes who rub against bus drivers regardless of gender, but in the end all tonight was is a loss to a Western Conference team that didn’t affect the standings too terribly because there are only 3 legitimately good teams in the East.

If there’s a part of me that’s upset, it’s the part that knew that I could have done something else with my evening. I could have read a book, taken a walk, watched a movie, wrapped Christmas presents, talked to my wife, exercised (lol), or simply laid on the floor in my unfinished basement contemplating life. What I did do in lieu of wasting precious energy being upset over something that is tragically ludicrous was play Disney Princess Yahtzee and drink whiskey.

I also watched every single second of the game tonight because even when everything was going wrong, I still held out hope that they could complete some kind of miraculous comeback and make it all worthwhile. Maybe that makes me a dumb person, but no one’s letting me into Mensa any time soon.

  • In what can only be described as the most appropriate way to watch this game, my completely healthy 18-month old daughter shit her diaper 4 times during the first period. That is 100% true.
  • Kudos to Tomas Jurco, who scored his first NHL goal tonight on a sweet little move after getting in all alone on Jonas Hiller. It’s not often your first goal can be a beauty like that, and I’m sure he savored the feeling of giving the Wings the lead for the entire 25 seconds they had it.
  • Congrats to Teemu Selanne on playing his final game at Joe Louis Arena. As a Wing fan, I enjoyed watching him put everything he had in to his play, and I know that he left blood, sweat, and a whole heck of a lot of tears on the Joe’s ice.
  • It’s a little disconcerting to know that the Wings spent literally 95% of the game down by at least a goal and 2/3rds down by 3 goals and still got out-shot.
  • When I think back to earlier this season, I remember that I wanted the kids to play a lot more. Tonight was a great window into what a rebuild would look like, and it’s scary.
  • Kyle Quincey has not been good this season, and while I’m no fan of Ryan Getzlaf, he easily deserved the 5 and a game that he got and I would not be surprised to see him get some supplemental discipline. It wasn’t a vicious hit, but Getzlaf had his back turned and Quincey got him right in the numbers. Expect the Wings to go on a “however-long-his-suspension-is” winning streak
  • I got kind of tired of watching the game because it was so terrible and despite my rambling above, I am kind of upset, as I’m sure all of you are, so here are Youtube videos of things that happened in the most recent set of games that actually mattered between the Ducks and Red Wings:
