In Red Wings Land

Lightning storms back to spoil Vanek, Red Wings, 6-4- Helene St.James: Detroit Free Press

The Red Wings opened the season in Tampa Bay, blowing a third period lead and giving up three power play goals, accumulating multiple bench minors for too many men. That sucked. On the bright side, Thomas Vanek and Frans Nielsen accounted for the Red Wings goals.

This is sought to be a redeeming season for Vanek, whose career bottomed out after scoring only 18 goals with the Wild last season. He was a surprising low-risk high-reward signing on a one year contract for Ken Holland.
