Quick Hits: The Learning on the Job Edition

In Red Wings Land

Red Wings’ rookies Dennis Cholowski, Filip Hronek experience ‘trial by fire’ | MLive

“If you go through the league, there’s a lot of really good young players, but most of them are forwards,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “Defense is a learned position, trial by fire. The biggest part with trial by fire is that guys keep their confidence and the coaches keep their confidence in the guys, and that can be tested at times when the puck goes in your net too much.”

I like the quote. It shows that Jeff Blashill understands that Dennis Cholowski and Filip Hronek are going to have bad nights and that’s just part of the gig this season. He knows he has to work to keep their confidence up and also can’t completely give up on them when they have terrible games.

This is what we want. We want the Red Wings’ young players to face the best competition. They’re not going to succeed every night, but they’re going to develop at the NHL level and that’s important.

NHL goes outdoors three times, All-Stars head to St. Louis in 2019-20 | NHL.com

The Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets begin a slate of three regular-season outdoor NHL games in 2019-20 when the 2019 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic returns to the schedule Oct. 26.

The four events for the 2019-20 season were announced by NHL Comissioner Gary Bettman during the second intermission of the 2019 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium.

In additon to the Heritage Classic, Commissioner Bettman announced the Dallas Stars will host the 2020 Winter Classic at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas on Jan. 1, the 2020 NHL All-Star Weekend will be at Enterprise Center in St. Louis on Jan. 24-26 and the Colorado Avalanche will host the NHL Stadium Series game at the United States Air Force Academy’s Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Feb. 15.

You have to imagine the Red Wings will be hosting the All-Star Game at Little Caesars Arena sooner rather than later. The NHL draft too.
