Quick Hits: The “Laine’s Better” Edition

The Big Story

GOTTA SEE IT: GAME COMES DOWN TO EITHER MATTHEWS OR LAINE IN OT – Sportsnet.ca

Hockey fans throughout the league were looking forward to seeing the first meeting of Auston Matthews, the latest #1 draft pick, and Patrik Laine, the player taken next.

Throughout the game, chants of “Laine’s better” echoed through the arena.

Of course it’s way too early to tell who will be the better player, but Laine clearly won the first head-to-head battle.

I don’t like getting into arguments over which player is better than another player, but it’s pretty great that we get to see these two play, along with Connor McDavid and other talented, exciting first and second year players.

If you want to argue about who’s better, have at it!

In Detroit Land

Jimmy Howard makes statement, but knows his place with Red Wings – Yahoo Puck Daddy: Greg Wyshynski

Some really great quotes in here. For example:

“Let’s be honest: Right now, Pete’s the No. 1,” he said. “I think I know how to handle this situation better now. Last year I didn’t quite understand how to be the backup. I’ve never done it before. I fully understand the role now, and how to keep mentally sharp in-between starts.”

With goalies like Quick and Smith going down throughout the league, one might think that maybe another team will be interested in Howard. But with his contract and other options like Ben Bishop, who will be a UFA after this season while Howard has 3 years left on his contract, Howard is likely not getting moved.
