Quick Hits: The Tire Fire Edition

In Red Wings Land

Andreas Athanasiou rejoins Red Wings, puts contract dispute in past | Brendan Savage, MLive

As I’m sure you have all heard, Athanasiou is back in a Red Wings uniform this week.

*exhale*

The timing certainly couldn’t be better, the Wings have a single point over their last five games. Brendan Savage has a good synopsis of the situation in this article, including some discussion about a conference call that took place between Ken Holland, Jeff Blashill, Athanasiou and his agent.

Jeff Blashill has also stated that if Athanasiou plays tonight, he’ll likely be on the Wings’ second powerplay unit right away. Eventually, he’ll also be getting time on the penalty kill.

Hopefully he sparks something in this team, they certainly need it.

Around the NHL

Arizona Coyotes, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers have been early disasters | ESPN.com

It might be hard to believe, but the Wings are actually far from the worst team in the league right now. I had no idea the Coyotes had yet to win a game almost three weeks into the season, for instance. Edmonton, Montreal and the Rangers are also teams in free-fall much like Detroit.

It’s been a rough few games for the Wings, but it could always be worse! Marc Bergevin is signed through 2022, after all. How’s that for a tire fire? At least Ken Holland’s current contract is up after this season.
