Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman were joined by Doug MacLean on the latest episode of their podcast. It’s a good listen for hockey fans, but one tidbit dropped by MacLean is quite interesting for Red Wings fans. MacLean claims that during his time with the Detroit organization, the Wings were in talks to acquire former rival Peter Forsberg in a 3-way trade back in 1992.

Apparently, according to MacLean, the basis for the deal would’ve seen Sergei Fedorov sent to the Quebec Nordiques, Eric Lindros would’ve still ended up with the Flyers and Forsberg would’ve come to Hockeytown.

That right there is quite the blockbuster trade.

I’m not sure how I would feel about that deal going down. Forsberg was one hell of a hockey player (when healthy), but Fedorov was one of my favorites. It raises so many questions too. Would the Red Wings still have won the Stanley Cup in 1997-1998 and 2002? Do they win more? Less? What happens in 1995 against the Devils? How would this impact the Wings rivalry with the Avalanche? Hell, does Fedorov do enough in Quebec and the franchise never moves?

It’s kind of crazy to think about.
