Red Wings Re-sign Teemu Pulkkinen

The Red Wings announced today that they have signed forward Teemu Pulkkinen to a one-year deal.

The 24-year-old restricted free agent was limited in 2015-16 due to injury and underwent shoulder surgery earlier this month to address an old issue. He scored six goals and added six assists in his 36 games last season.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today re-signed right wing Teemu Pulkkinen to a one-year contract.

Pulkkinen was limited to 36 games with the Red Wings in 2015-16 due to injury but picked up 12 points (6-6-12) and 14 penalty minutes. The 24-year-old has totaled 70 games with the club since making his NHL debut in 2013-14, registering 20 points (11-9-20) and 26 penalty minutes. In 2014-15, Pulkkinen earned a spot on the AHL’s First All-Star Team and won the league’s Willie Marshall Award for top goal-scorer, amassing 61 points (34-27-61) despite playing in 46 games due to time spent in the NHL. He was also a 2015 AHL All-Star and member of the 2014 AHL All-Rookie Team. In 119 games with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins between 2012-15, he tallied 121 points (65-56-121) and added 34 points (22-12-34) in 40 AHL Calder Cup Playoff games.

Originally drafted by Detroit in the fourth round (111th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Pulkkinen also played parts of five seasons for Jokerit in the SM-Liiga from 2008-13 prior to coming to North America, notching 128 points (49-79-128) in 185 games. Pulkkinen was the league’s rookie of the year after registering 54 points (18-36-54) with Jokerit in 2010-11. The Vantaa, Finland, native has also represented his country internationally on several occasions, picking up 19 points (9-10-19) in 13 games during the 2011 and 2012 IIHF World Junior Championships and adding 28 points (17-11-28) in 12 games at the 2009 and 2010 Under-18 World Championships, earning back-to-back bronze medals. He also debuted for the men’s national team at the 2016 IIHF World Championship, logging two assists in eight games.

Contract details are not immediately available due to club policy.

UPDATE: The one-year deal is worth $812,500.
