Red Wings Release 2016 Development Camp Roster and Schedule

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today released the schedule and preliminary roster for their 2016 Development Camp, which will be held at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Mich., from July 6-10. The camp begins on Wednesday, July 6 and features on-ice skill development and off-ice workouts each day, including scrimmages onFriday, July 8 and Sunday, July 10. The camp roster currently consists of 39 players: 23 forwards, 11 defensemen and five goaltenders.

The camp will be split into two sides, Team Howe and Team Lindsay, and will feature daily on-ice instruction and skill development from a team of coaches, led by Grand Rapids Griffins head coach Todd Nelson. Attendees will also take part in NHL-level off-ice workouts and attend classes designed to help players transition to professional hockey, while receiving feedback from Red Wings coaches and management.

The Red Wings’ two most recent first-round picks will be in attendance in right wing Evgeny Svechnikov (19th overall in 2015) and defenseman Dennis Cholowski (20th overall in 2016). Slated to turn pro with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins this fall, Svechnikov won a silver medal with Russia at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship this season and racked up 79 points (32-47-79) in 50 games with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Cholowski, a Second-Team All-Star for the Chilliwack Chiefs in the British Columbia Hockey League, registered 40 points (12-28-40) in 50 games this season. He will attend St. Cloud State University in the fall.

In addition to Cholowski, each of the team’s selections from the 2016 NHL Entry Draft this past weekend at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y., are slated to be in attendance: wingers Givani Smith and Mattias Elfstrom; defensemen Filip Hronek, Alfons Malmstrom and Jordan Sambrook; and goaltender Filip Larsson. The camp also includes all six players the Red Wings drafted in 2015, five drafted in 2014, three drafted in 2013, two drafted in 2012 and a trio of prospects signed but not drafted by Detroit, including defenseman Joe Hicketts, a 2016 WHL First-Team All-Star signed by the team as a free agent after impressing during 2014 Development Camp and Training Camp; defenseman Dan Renouf, who made his pro debut with Grand Rapids after signing with the Red Wings following a three-year career at the University of Maine; and left wing Dylan Sadowy, a 45-goal scorer in the Ontario Hockey League acquired by Detroit from San Jose in May.

Centre Ice Arena has annually hosted Red Wings events since 1997, including the summer development camp and an NHL Prospect Tournament that has expanded to eight teams, held in September before Detroit’s main training camp. All practices are open to the public. Tickets are available in-person only at Centre Ice Arena for $5 per day on each day of the event. Centre Ice Arena is located at 1600 Chartwell Drive in Traverse City, Mich.
