Red Wings sign Michael Rasmussen to four-year extension

Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman is already getting to work on tasks that are usually parsed out in the offseason. The Wings announced Tuesday that forward Michael Rasmussen has signed a contract extension for four years at $3.2 million AAV:

Rasmussen has grown into one of Detroit’s most-valuable utility players since making his NHL debut in 2018. He’s coming off of a career season in 22-23, and should easily top his numbers when it’s all said and done for 23-24. The “Moose” has 23 points (11-12–23) through 55 games this season. Last year, he suited up in 56 games and produced 29 points (10-19–29).

The six-foot-six 212-pound forward was drafted 9th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, by then-GM Ken Holland. At the time, there were other prospects on the board at pick nine that perhaps most fans would prefer today, but Rasmussen has made the case for himself over the past few seasons as a viable option on any line and in any situation. His skating has improved and he’s using his massive frame to his advantage more and more.

The Spin

Ras has been one of my favorite players to watch this season. I was never worried about getting him re-signed or what the contract would look like. Rasmussen turns 25 in April, and this contract will soak up some of his prime years. If he can continue with his current trajectory, a cap-hit just north of $3 million is easily digestible. Rasmussen gets rewarded for his performance and leadership (he has donned the “A” after all), and the Wings get to keep another “straw that stirs the drink” type player with room to grow.

Four more years of THE MOOSE!
