Hello everyone! My name is Riley McPherson and I’m very excited to be returning with the relaunch of Winging it in Motown. I loved being part of such a wonderful community and I’m so happy that we are continuing to make content for you all. Here’s a little introduction to who I am for those of you who don’t know me or just a refresher for anyone who does.
I’m a 29-year-old native of a small town called Otsego, Michigan. I currently reside in Australia as I moved here to be with my now-wife. I played hockey for 13 years before going on to attend the University of Michigan as well as Grand Valley State University, where I got my degree in Multimedia Journalism. I was the Sports Director for both WCKS The Whale, GVSU’s student-run radio station, and GVTV, GVSU’s student-run TV station, for two years. I was one of the lead broadcasters for GVSU’s women’s hockey team for those two years as well as a producer for the GVTV sports news show, After the Whistle.
I’ve been a diehard Red Wings fan since I was a very little kid with some of my first memories being the 1998 Stanley Cup Final. My favorite player of all time is Brendan Shanahan who I think also deserves to have his number retired in Detroit, but that’s for another time. My favorite current player is Mo Seider with Dylan Larkin a very close second (I know, how original).
Last but honestly most important, I’m a transgender woman. I use she/her pronouns. I’ve been publicly out as trans for nearly two and a half years now and have been physically transitioning since April 15th, 2021. I’m very open with my transition and it is a massive part of who I am and if you have a problem with that, honestly, that really sucks for you but I’m not quiet about it. I’m very happy to be back here writing for all of you and I look forward to our interactions going forward!!
