2015-16 Red Wings Home Opener set against Maple Leafs on October 9th

The Full NHL Schedule is set to come out tomorrow around midday, but they’ve given us a little pre-Awards show teaser by releasing the home opener date a bit early. Here’s who the Red Wings will play first at Joe Louis Arena for the 2015-16 NHL season:

It couldn’t be anybody but the Maple Leafs, could it? We often criticize the NHL for kind of dumb scheduling decisions (such as not putting the outdoor game against Colorado on March 26th like it should be), but after Mike Babcock leaving the Wings to coach in Toronto, it only makes sense to have his first regular season return trip be the very first game at the Joe.

In addition to the October 9th game, we’ve also learned that the Wings will head to Carolina on Saturday the 10th to help the Hurricanes open up their arena for the fans.

I expect Babcock will get a warm welcome from the fans in attendance. Hopefully his team leaves sad though.
