2016 World Junior Championship Schedule, Broadcast Times, Red Wings Prospects

The World Junior Championships are upon us! The world’s best hockey youth are set to represent their countries, and NHL teams in an action-packed tournament.

Detroit will be sending a handful of their prospects to Helsinki to compete. Here’s the list:

Red Wings Prospects participating in the year’s tournament:

Canada: Joe Hicketts (undrafted)

Sweden: Christoffer Ehn (2014, 106th overall), Axel Holmstrom (2014, 196th overall)

Finland: Vili Saarijarvi (2015, 73rd overall)

Russia: Evgeny Svechnikov (2015, 19th overall)

Switzerland: Joren van Pottelberghe (2015, 110th overall)

I am personally picking Team Sweden to take the entire tournament by storm, so keep an eye on both Ehn and Holmstrom. Ehn will serve as a bottom-six forward, while Holmstrom should slate right in the top-six. Joe Hicketts will be the bonafide top defenseman for Canada, as he’s one of the best in the tournament, and a seasoned WJC veteran. Additionally, Red Wings new-comers Evgeny Svechnikov and Vili Saarijarvi are locks to get some big minutes for their teams as well. Svechnikov is a player that not many Red Wings faithful know of, so if you have the chance to watch Russia play, keep an eye out for him. He’s a lot of fun to watch.
