Goalie Ratings
Corsi-wise the goaltenders were even. Shot-wise, Detroit put one more on net. Chance-wise, I think the Hawks had more of those. Howard will squeak out a head-to-head win for being the only reason Detroit got as far as a shootout. Overall, I”m going to give him a +1.
The Goals
2nd Period 06:11 – Chicago Goal: Viktor Stalberg (backhand) from Duncan Keith and Bryan Bickell
The Wings get caught running around in their own end and Stalberg makes them pay with a quick goal from behind the net. Minuses for coverage go to Quincey and Emmerton with a half to Tootoo. Miller will be cleared of his minus. Q is beaten off the boards by Keith and Emmerton loses Stalberg in the muck. Tootoo has no business being that low if he’s not going to seal that post while he’s covering down there.
2nd Period 15:40 – Detroit Goal (PP): Johan Franzen (tip in) from Henrik Zetterberg and Jakub Kindl
The Wings get a shooting gallery going and eventually score on a tip from Franzen in front. Zetterberg will get a bonus assist on this play as he does much of the heavy-lifting in making sure the shots kept coming and the Wings kept possession.
2nd Period 17:39 – Detroit Goal: Cory Emmerton (wrist shot) from Drew Miller and Jordin Tootoo
The Wings win a board battle and Emmerton comes walking out of the corner to put a shot on goal. Crawford stops the first, but Emmerton cleans up his own rebound to put the Wings ahead. Emmerton will get a self-assist on this play and Tootoo a bonus half-plus for an outlet which gets the Wings through the neutral zone with speed.
3rd Period 17:03 – Chicago Goal: Jonathan Toews (wrist shot) from Johnny Oduya and Michael Frolik
The Hawks drive guys to the front of the net and get the puck there as Toews picks up a loose puck in front and slams it home to tie it late. Re-watching this, Quincey took a couple of well-timed cross-checks in front of the net to give Toews the ability to get this puck. I’m not going to clear his minus because there’s a bit of running around here, but my bigger problem is with what Colaiacovo is doing on this whole play. He gets himself caught behind two picks and is lying on the ice while the goal is being scored because he tripped over his own goalie. If he isn’t clumsy, he’s got a decent shot at blocking that pass. Colaiacovo gets a coverage minus. Cleary is a little weak on the zone entry and on an attempted stick-lift by Frolik. Filppula is getting outmuscled by Bickell in front of the net. Neither will have a minus cleared. Franzen will get half his minus cleared. If not for a net-front clear immediately prior to the pass from Oduya, the goal happens earlier.
Penalty Adjustments (pluses and minuses only)
1st Period 02:20 – Kyle Quincey (interference): Quincey doesn’t communicate well on a loose puck and then takes a step into Andrew Shaw’s path away from the puck. Dumb penalty, minus for Quincey.
1st Period 12:08 – Michal Handzus (tripping): Drew Miller earns a plus for some hustle through the neutral zone which creates a penalty as Handzus trips him.
2nd Period 14:01 – Viktor Stalberg (holding): Great hustle will earn Nyquist a plus, as he establishes body position and causes Shaw to bring him down.
3rd Period 13:43 – Jakub Kindl (hooking): At the time, it was a good penalty to take to prevent Hossa from a fantastic scoring chance. Right before a good penalty to take was Jakub Kindl chasing Marian Hossa too far up the zone and letting him get a step. Kindl will get a minus.
Bonus Ratings
-1 to Valtteri Filppula: Too weak in this one. Not enough shooting. Not enough chancing. Not enough physicality. Outplayed by Nyquist again.
-1 to Damien Bruner: His decisions with the puck are still happening too slowly. The guy’s got to be better.
-1 to Kyle Quincey: Just about every shift with him was an adventuresome nightmare.
Honorable Mentions:
I’d like to honorably stab myself in the forehead watching this team sputter through the end of the regular season.
