CSSI Analysis: Western Conference Semifinals Game 7: Red Wings 1 – Blackhawks 2 (OT)

What a way for the season to end. I’m very proud of this team. I’m also very sad right now and this analysis is going to be a bit more bare-bones than usual.

CSSI Methodology Explanation here

Goalie Ratings

Head-to-Head: Even
Overall: +1

The Goals

2nd Period 01:08 – Chicago Goal: Patrick Sharp (wrist shot) from Marian Hossa and Michal Handzus
The Wings fuck up a line change and the puck ends up in the back of their net on a 3-on-1 rush with Sharp finishing from a… tight angle. Minuses cleared for Quincey and Smith, given back to Ericsson and Kronwall on the bad change. Franzen will be cleared as he’s chasing down the dump that doesn’t get far enough.

3rd Period 00:26 – Detroit Goal: Henrik Zetterberg (wrist shot) from Gustav Nyquist and Daniel Cleary
The Wings pull even early on a great play to get into the zone off a blue line turnover by Chicago. Nyquist feeds a beautiful saucer across the crease where Z taps it into the wide-open net as soon as the pass touches down. Smith with the third assist, Cleary with a bonus plus and a bonus half-assist. Zetterberg with a bonus plus. Great work here on transition

Overtime 03:35 – Chicago Goal: Brent Seabrook (wrist shot) from Dave Bolland
Seabrook ends it with a wrister from the slot that tips off Kronwall and slips up over Howard’s glove. This one’s bad luck, but I’d like Kronwall to play more aggressively on the on-rushing defender. Based on how this play develops from the offensive zone faceoff win that turns into a change in possession, I’m not going to clear any minuses nor will I make additional adjustments.

Penalty Adjustments (pluses and minuses only)

1st Period 05:20 – Duncan Keith (tripping): Abdelkader earns a plus as he bugs Duncan Keith on a forecheck and Keith stupidly takes Abby’s skates out from under him.
1st Period 09:22Joakim Andersson (interference): The Wings give up a scoring chance out front and Andersson gets whistled for pushing Andrew Shaw over away from the puck. Easy call; minus for Andersson.
1st Period 18:16 –
Cory Emmerton (interference): The Hawks are cycling low threatening to get scoring chances when Emmerton circles just inside of Stalberg in the corner. It’s a great play to establish his position right up until he checks Stalberg into the boards away from the puck. Almost a great play, but almost doesn’t cut it. Emmerton will earn a minus.

2nd Period 09:09 Justin Abdelkader (tripping): Abdelkader gets a minus as he stands his ground on the blue line against Patrick Kane and gets burned when he misses the puck and takes down his man.

3rd Period 06:07Jonathan Ericsson (hooking): Riggy gets a minus as Patrick Sharp walks him and gets a scoring chance. It’s all Riggy can do to prevent a better scoring chance.

Bonus Ratings

-1 to Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen: Just not good enough to get it done in this one.

Honorable Mentions:
