Detroit Red Wings Expected to Play 2016 Stadium Series Game vs. Colorado Avalanche
Well this is interesting.
As I just said on @NBCSN pre-game show, expectation is NHL will announce this weekend outdoor games next season for COL and MIN.— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) January 22, 2015
MIN's opponent expected to be CHI; COL's opponent expected to be DET. BOS, of course, will host MTL on Jan. 1 in Winter Classic in Foxboro.— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) January 22, 2015
Interesting choices for the stadium series. I guess the NHL got tired of us picking on Minnesota for never having had an outdoor game. That's not important though; the Wild get Chicago to make absolutely sure that they'll actually draw numbers.
The more interesting piece is that the league is finally trying to recognize the best rivalry it's had in the last 20 years as they pit Detroit as the only natural choice to play the bad guys in front of a Colorado crowd. Back when Chicago was still climbing back into relevance on the national hockey stage, we got to go through the same thing in Wrigley, so it's fitting.
No word yet on whether we're talking Coors Field or Mile High, but if I had to guess, I'd say the baseball stadium is the more-likely destination. Maybe they'll surprise us though. Either way, it should be a good time.
My only question:
Is the NHL smart enough to schedule the Wings/Avs Stadium Series game on March 26th?— Winging It In Motown (@wingingitmotown) January 22, 2015
