Quick Hits: The Mantha Injury, Defensive Issues & Trade Talk Edition

In Red Wings Land

Detroit Red Wings might not see top winger Anthony Mantha for rest of season | Freep

The big hole is that of top-line winger Anthony Mantha, who suffered a rib cage/shoulder injury Dec. 21 at Toronto.

“He’s still a ways away,” Blashill said Tuesday after an optional practice at Xcel Energy Center. “A month maybe.”

Pressed for more, Blashill said: “it’s going to be a long process before he’s healed,” and said that while he doesn’t anticipate it, there is a chance Mantha may miss the remainder of the season.

Well that’s definitely a bummer.

Red Wings meet extra long to fix defensive issues | Detroit News

There was a meeting scheduled, going over the details and responsibilities in defensive zone coverage — and let’s say it ran a little long.

“It was something I wasn’t going to leave until we had it straight,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “We have to be better. I talked about it last night (after the 6-3 loss in Colorado). We have to get better in our D-zone coverage.

“Until everybody had a chance to make sure we understood, we weren’t leaving that meeting. If it ran a little long, it ran a little long.”

I guess we’ll find out tonight if everyone really understood.

Trade Talk

Red Wings’ trade deadline options appear limited | MLive

Of their impending UFAs (Green, Daley, Jonathan Ericsson, Jimmy Howard), I think the only one who might draw interest is Green, due to his offensive ability. But he’s experiencing his worst season, offensively and defensively, and he was injured in Monday’s loss at Colorado, so I doubt they could get more than a fourth- or fifth-round pick.

Sadly, it’s probably true. I’d be over the moon if the Red Wings were able to get a second round pick for Green. If Steve Yzerman wants to get a good return, I imagine he would have to trade someone like Andreas Athanasiou or maybe Luke Glendening.

Speaking of which…

Acquire a 3C

The gold standard is Pageau, and if Holland could engineer a trade-and-sign, he may change his mind on what he’s willing to send to Ottawa. Assuming Pageau becomes too rich for Edmonton’s blood, think Luke Glendening from Detroit, who has a 56.5 faceoff percentage and leads all Red Wings centremen in shorthanded ice time. He’s 30.

I bet Kenny is kicking those tires!
