Getting tired of big games yet? TOO BAD.
I am not exaggerating when I say that tonight’s game is a BIG one. The ramifications of a regulation win and some help out of town would catapult Detroit’s playoff chances to over 70%. Both Washington and Detroit, along with a few other teams, are racing to get the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Capitals are currently on a six-game losing streak while the Wings are 2-2-2 in that same span.
To make matters worse (depending on who you are), tonight’s game will be broadcast on ESPN. The last time both of these teams met was exactly two weeks ago — Washington won that game in overtime. The Wings need to get this win and do it in regulation.
The non-Red Wings player to watch tonight will be Alex Ovechkin. The 18-year NHL veteran is one goal shy of eclipsing the 30-goal mark for the ninth time in his career. In the last 10 games, the “Great 8” has scored nine goals.
Important note: Moritz Seider did not skate this morning. He’s battling an illness, but Lalonde said he expects him to play tonight. Still possible Mo could be a last-minute scratch.
