Game Day Updates: Wings vs. Flames

Credit: Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The Red Wings are back home after taking down division rival Ottawa Senators on the road Saturday afternoon, bringing their record to 4-1-0. It will be the first back-to-back for Detroit of the 2023-2024 season, their next challenge — the Calgary Flames, who are 2-2-1 on the season.

Saturday’s win in Ottawa was a big one for Detroit and it’s largely thanks to Ville Husso and the power play, which boasts the best efficiency in the NHL (50%). Much like the saying goes — if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. We expect head coach Derek Lalonde to deploy a similar lineup that brought home the W Saturday, just with a different goalie between the pipes. James Reimer is expected to get the nod this afternoon after posting a shutout against the Columbus Blue Jackets on October 16th.

Key Matchups

Supercharged Special Teams: As mentioned before, Detroit is riding on the back of the league’s top power-play and top-10 penalty-kill unit. The Wings scored three PP goals in Ottawa on five attempts, and allowed just one PP goal on Ottawa’s six tries. If Detroit’s special teams can stay hot — the sky is the limit. Calgary currently has the NHL’s fifth-best PK, so Lalonde and his guys will have it cut out for themselves if and when they go on the advantage.

Down a Man: One of Calgary’s best defenseman, Rasmus Andersson, is serving a four-game suspension for his hit on Patrik Laine during Friday’s game against Columbus, which the Flames lost 3-1. That creates an opportunity for Detroit, which has stung opponents with its impressive offensive prowess early in the season. The Wings currently rank second in the NHL for goals for (24)… Meanwhile, Calgary’s goals against is good enough to be 18th.
